I'm in Houston.
(Downtown Houston by the Galleria)
When I got here, I first needed to get my TB test results "read" to me.
There's this weird rule that after you get tested, you have to hear the results read to you within 48-72 hours otherwise you have to pay to be re-tested. I tested in Madison on Monday night at 6pm, and had to find a new Walgreen's in Houston to get my results.
She circled a huge positive on my sheet, and then instantly felt horrible because she meant to circle negative.
Registering and doing all the paperwork on Thursday was pretty hectic, but I finally got into my room at the Renaissance Hotel, and it is pritttttay nice.
(Tight)
(Really comfy bed)
My roommate Michael is actually from Houston, attended some grad school at Rice, and at night is choosing to stay at home with the g/f to appease her (can't blame him). We do share some quality bonding sessions during the day and early morning pre-lectures.
During paperwork, I got news that I have an interview tomorrow (today) at 4:10 for a school in Central Houston. I also received a sweet tote bag with goodies including...
(Holler at Suzie Blackman)
I had no clue that I had an interview today and it was a little scary... it was for a Generalist Position at an elementary school PK-5.
I was exhausted last night, but still didn't go to bed until about 11:30pm and then had to wake up at 6:30ish to make it to breakfast...
I got out of bed at 7:15am and decided to make coffee here and have a couple
We had some general lectures on Houston in general, some TFA vision concepts, and then help preparing for our interview. Lunch was a Turkey Wrap served with 4 plates and 7 different sized forks-- hyperbole, but still absurd.
I received a call at around 1pm to inform me that I actually would have an impromptu second interview, at 3:10pm today, with an elementary school with 97% Hispanic population. I prepared as quickly as I could and did the best I could.
And I got the job.
I'm extremely excited to have a job as a 5th grade teacher at the school, they even mentioned having me help premiere a school newsletter ran by the students.
They told me that they fell in love with me and wanted to "scoop me up" before I had a second interview.
The three that interviewed me were awesome, laughed at my enthusiasm to attempt some Portuñol, and told me that it was alright that I didn't speak Spanish. I know that I will have to brush up on it to reach out to the parents, but I'm still very excited for that.
The princiPAL welcomed me to their family, and all of us were giddy to begin this new partnership.
:D
